About

The organization was originally established in 1953 as the "Turkish-American Club." Its main purpose was to foster a better understanding of Turkey and the Turkish people in the USA and to provide opportunities for Turkish Americans to come together and celebrate special occasions such as holidays. After strong periods with many activities, it experienced relatively quiet times. In 1985, the association's bylaws were revised to allow it to become a tax-exempt, non-profit organization. With tax-exempt status, all donations made to the organization are tax-deductible. Its name was changed to the Turkish American Association of Southern California. The abbreviation ATASC is consistent with the members' philosophy: a group committed to the teachings of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of modern Turkey (also referred to as ATA, which means "father").
